You are a very proactive person. You make sure that you eat healthy and you exercise as often as possible. You check to make sure you keep all of your preventative medical appointments, and you get all of those annoying medical tests that keep you healthy. You even make sure that your partner and children keep all of their appointments as well. While you may be the healthiest person in your friend and family group, how can you make sure that your teeth and gums are healthy? Here are some guidelines to ensure there is nothing going on with your teeth and gums and that you have excellent oral hygiene.
Do Your Have Pain When You Chew?
It is challenging to reach your molars with your toothbrush and dental floss because they tend to be close together, making brushing them difficult. Also, more food particles become trapped in your teeth when you chew with your back molars. One of the consequences of not brushing and flossing well is cavities along the bite surface of one of your molars. If you are feeling pain when you chew, it is possible you have a cavity on the biting surface of a molar.
To prevent this, be sure you are brushing and flossing your molars effectively. Ask our dentist if they notice excessive plaque or tartar on your back molars. Both plaque and tartar are by-products of the bacteria in your mouth. You remove plaque by tooth brushing, but you cannot remove tartar yourself - only a dental hygienist or dentist can remove tartar from your teeth.
Do You Have Bleeding Gums?
Bleeding gums are a signal that you may have the beginning stages of gum disease. Gum disease happens when bacteria cause irritation and inflammation of your gums, which could lead to infection in later stages. If you have bleeding gums, you need to talk to our dentist and check to make sure you are brushing your teeth and gums thoroughly. There are types of toothpaste that emphasize gum health so you can heal your own gums.
