People with type 1 or type 2 diabetes need to live as healthy a lifestyle as possible. Having a chronic illness like diabetes can make caring for teeth and gums challenging, but it can be accomplished with patience and perseverance. Here are some tips on caring for your dental health if you have diabetes.
What Is Diabetes?
If you have diabetes, your body does not control the levels of sugar in it well. Ordinarily, you have an organ called the pancreas that helps your body regulate sugar levels. However, if you have diabetes, your body either does not produce any insulin - which controls the level of sugar in your body - or you produce very little insulin. There are two types of diabetes. If you have had diabetes since childhood and you do not produce any insulin, you have type 1 diabetes. People with type 2 diabetes produce very little insulin.
If you have too much sugar in your body, it can cause a lot of problems. You are at a higher risk for heart disease and stroke. Also, you can damage your kidneys because they are working overtime trying to regulate your sugar levels. You can also begin to have damage in your feet and hands because there is too much sugar in your body, and it can cause nerve damage. Diabetes can also cause blindness.
Taking Care of Your Teeth
People with diabetes can continue to live productive, healthy lives if they take care of themselves. You can regulate your sugar by taking insulin. Also, you need to monitor your blood sugar daily. Be sure you are brushing your teeth and flossing them twice a day. Regular dental checkups can also check for gum disease, which people with diabetes are prone to. If you stick to a healthy eating pattern, regulate your blood sugar, and clean your teeth daily, your gums and teeth will remain healthy.
